Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovarian syndrome, PCOS, is the most common endocrine dysfunction of women which affects up to 25% of the female population. It is a dysregulation of various hormonal and metabolic processes. PCOS can be a serious health condition that affects many parts of your body, and can produce a variety of symptoms that include excess hair growth or male pattern baldness, irregular or absent menstruation, acne, or infertility.

The symptoms of PCOS can be wide-ranging and devastating and can vary widely between women. Your list of symptoms could be completely different than someone else, even though you both share the same underlying condition.

PCOS and Fertility

PCOS is the #1 cause of female infertility and is a common, growing threat to women’s fertility. According to western medicine, most women with PCOS have one to two, if not all, of the primary symptoms below:

  • Menstrual irregularities and ovulationdysfunction
  • Insulinresistance
  • Excess facial and body hairgrowth
  • Skin problems
  • Polycystic ovaries seen upon ultrasound

PCOS is a disorder that causes various hormone levels to become irregular, along with inflammation. Ovulation may be disrupted, making it hard to become pregnant, and many hormones become unbalanced which may make it hard to carry a baby full term.

The Natural Approach to PCOS

Thought to be a metabolic issue that responds to treatment much like those who suffer from insulin resistance, many women experience positive results when treated for PCOS through exercise, nutrition improvement, acupunctureherbal medicine, or in summary a holistic approach.

Today many people are finding that integrating natural treatment options are a highly effective alternative to traditional medicines and treatment, especially when trying to conceive. Studies have shown that administering acupuncture (specifically electro acupuncture) they were able to prove that it had a positive effect on the hormone levels as well as PCOS symptoms.

Many nutrients have also been studied and have proven to be more or just as effective as metformin (a pharmaceutical drug used to treat PCOS when trying to conceive). However, none of these therapies are as effective on their own, it is important to have an individualized treatment plan based on your report of findings.
