Fertility, Pregnancy, Postpartum

Thinking about getting pregnant? Ready to get pregnant? Wanting to get pregnant yesterday?

Having a healthy foundation is essential and can greatly increase your chances, for conception either naturally or through advanced reproductive technology.  Allowing 3-6 months to prepare your body for pregnancy not only produces healthier eggs and sperm, but it also creates an optimal environment for your growing baby.

I enhance your fertility by addressing all aspects of your health, nutrition, lifestyle, constitution and mind to fully prepare you for preconception and pregnancy.

I am pleased to offer customized, integrative, comprehensive treatment plans to optimize your health and hormone balance.

Infertility

I understand that conception is not easy for all couples, and fertility issues are at the forefront of reproductive health.  If you are having difficulty conceiving or maintaining a pregnancy, Chinese medicine and integrative medicine can offer many options.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used to enhance fertility for centuries. Recently, studies have provided evidence that acupuncture and Chinese herbs can increase blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, stimulate ovulation in women and can help increase sperm concentration and motility in men.

I have experienced firsthand how strongly TCM can positively influence the reproductive and endocrine systems. I have had the pleasure of helping many couples achieve healthy pregnancies.  It has brought me tremendous joy to be part of this meaningful process.

During your first visit, I take time to listen to your needs and goals. My goal is to identify and treat the root cause of your infertility while at the same time optimizing your health, wellness and hormone balance using acupuncture, herbs, supplements, nutrition therapy, and lifestyle counseling. My approach treats you as a whole person, integrating mind, body and emotions to address your health on all levels.

I am also well versed in conventional medical treatment approaches to infertility.  It is my goal to help you navigate these options to decide the best course of action for you and your family.

As a fertility specialist, I work closely with western physicians, as well as consulting with a network of excellent health care practitioners who understand fertility issues.

Female Fertility

The goal of Chinese Medicine is to promote a healthier and more balanced state, which optimizes your chances for conception. TCM has been clinically proven to:

  • Improve the function of the ovaries to produce higher quality eggs
  • Regulate menstrual cycles
  • Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
  • Increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine lining
  • Relax and de-stress —so your body is a safe, cozy place for a baby to grow
  • Strengthen the immune system/Increase energy
  • Increase chance of conceiving
  • Enhance the chances of successful implantation
  • Decrease chance of miscarriage
  • Improve quality of sleep and increase energy

Common Fertility Disorders Treated with TCM

  • Elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • Repeated pregnancy loss
  • Unexplained (idiopathic) infertility
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Amenorrhea
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts & Uterine Fibroids
  • Irregular and annovulatory menstrual cycles
  • Luteal phase defect (LPD)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Premature ovarian failure (POF)
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Stress
  • Poor egg quality
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Thin, unresponsive endometrium
  • Almost any type of fertility disorder including spasmed tubes.
(Spasmed tubes are often relaxed with acupuncture, though blocked tubes will not respond to acupuncture).

While starting acupuncture at any point in your preconception or fertility journey is beneficial, I recommend three months of preparation to increase chances of a healthy pregnancy.  Three months is important because takes about 90-150 days for an egg to grow from a follicle in its resting state to a full blown egg ready to be released.  My goal is to help create healthy high quality follicles, balance hormones and get the body as a whole in the best condition for conception to occur.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

Many couples today are utilizing assisted reproductive therapies of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and intra-uterine injections (IUI). The addition of Chinese medicine to these therapies greatly improves the success of a pregnancy by:

  • Improving the lining of the uterus
  • Improving the quality and quantity of follicles (120 days)
  • Significantly reducing stress associated with the cycle
  • Decreasing the chance of miscarriage
  • Preventing uterine contraction post IVF embryo transfer
  • Reducing the side-effects of IVF medications
  • Improving male factor — volume, motility and morphology (120 days)

When Should Treatment Begin?

Ideally, patients are treated for three to four months before an insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), or donor-egg transfer.  As stated above, we are working with the maturing egg to create the highest quality. If you are in a cycle or about to start a cycle, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can still be helpful.

The Pre- and Post- Embryo Transfer Treatments

The chances of conception increase when acupuncture is given before and shortly after the embryo is transferred to the uterus during an IVF treatment, which is known as pre- and post transfer treatments. Scientific studies have shown that this improves uterine artery blood flow, decreases uterine contractions, supports the endometrial lining and implantation, and increases pregnancy rates.

Preparing for IVF

Prior to starting Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatments, I highly recommend 3-4 months of acupuncture to prepare you for conception and to increase your changes of achieving a healthy pregnancy. Benefits you may experience are: reduction in the stress that can interfere with ovulation, regulation of menses, and a general feeling of good health.

My integrative, personalized approach will lay the foundation for a healthy body resulting in an increased chance of conception, healthier pregnancy and baby.

Male Fertility

Infertility affects both men and women in equal proportion. Because male infertility accounts for 40-50% of infertility cases, it is essential that men have a healthy foundation as well. Male fertility is commonly due to low sperm production, misshapen or immobile sperm, or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors can play a role in causing male infertility.

My goal for treating men is to balance your health and to improve your semen quality.   This is crucial, because it takes about 100 days for a male to create and mature sperm.  During preconception treatments, we focus on  nutrition and lifestyle modifications and often use supplements and Chinese herbal medicine to improve sperm health and overall wellbeing.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting and wonderful time. However, with the many physical and hormonal changes that occur, it can be a time of discomfort. Acupuncture and nutritional therapies provide a drug-free, effective and non-invasive treatment option for:

  • Morning sickness
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Hypertension
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Headaches
  • Anemia
  • Insomnia & Fatigue
  • Constipation & Hemorrhoids
  • Heartburn
  • Premature & Overdue Labor

With my experience in obstetrics, as well as my personal experience as a mother, I am able to provide you with the resources and treatment options to ensure you have a healthy pregnancy, birth and recovery.

Postpartum

Acupuncture provides excellent postpartum care as it encompasses techniques that promote a healthy recovery essential for mother and newborn. It is extremely effective with:

  • Postpartum depression
  • Insufficient lactation
  • Mastitis
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Pain and scar tissue repair
