If you are a woman in the area who has been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure (POF), you probably already know that this condition is much like menopause, only it\’s happened at a younger age. POF is not a common condition, however it typically affects women in their early to mid 30\’s which can be challenging if you\’re wanting to become pregnant. Since there is no medically-backed treatment for premature ovarian failure, could acupuncture and Chinese medicine benefit you?
It\’s possible, depending on the risk factors that may have contributed to you having the condition. For some, it\’s a hereditary (family history) issue. For other women, POF may have developed due to endometriosis, high FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), low AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone), or conditions that impact the reproductive system. Autoimmune diseases, ovarian damage caused by chemotherapy or surgery, viral infections, toxins, and chromosomal defects are other possible causes of premature ovarian failure.
In women where there is an absence of chromosomal defects, ovarian failure is frequently intermittent. This simply means that you may occasionally produce estrogen and ovulate, giving you a window in which you could potentially become pregnant. Each woman is different, and in some it may be possible to reverse premature ovarian failure.
In the meantime there is much you can do to boost your physical and emotional health, which in turn supports a more fertile reproductive system. Eat a healthy diet, exercise, reduce stress and exposure to toxins, and consider acupuncture treatment. Why?
Acupuncture is known for eliminating stress and anxiety, but it also increases blood flow to the reproductive organs and tissues. Proper blood flow improves egg quality, provides nourishment to the ovaries, reduces elevated FSH levels, and may help you have more regular periods. Considering you likely have uncomfortable side effects similar to those of menopause such as hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness or problems sleeping, acupuncture also addresses these issues so that you feel better in general.
Certain Chinese herbs also support a healthier immune system, better sleep, increased levels of estrogen, and reduced stress. Some work to encourage a more normal ovulation cycle, while others reduce hot flashes and help regulate the endocrine system.
