Tips for a Healthy & Happy Holiday

For many the holiday season is beautiful, fun and joyful – but it can also be overwhelming and stressful. Often the holiday season comes with added stress, anxiety and slipping into old unhealthy patterns and behaviors. We’re not just talking about overspending on gifts… for many the holidays are a time that we neglect ourselves and health.

I know it’s extra challenging to stay healthy during the holidays. I don’t blame you. You want to enjoy time with the people you are around – often staying up late and not getting enough sleep. The temptation from foods and drinks that don’t agree with you can be overwhelming. Many of us begin feeling guilty and resentful towards ourselves for over indulging instead of just letting ourselves enjoy the day.

It can be intense with all the holiday parties, peer pressure and added stress. We so often put pressure on ourselves to have the “perfect” holiday season. We tend to set high expectations for the parties, the gifts, the food – all of it. And unfortunately many of us do this while neglecting ourselves and we HAVE to get out of this habit. So how do we do that? How do we remember to prioritize ourselves and wellness in a season that can be so stressful?

Before we dive into the actionable tips, first know this:

>>> To achieve the results you want, you must BELIEVE it’s possible.<<<

You MUST trust yourself to navigate the holidays. You HAVE to give yourself the benefit of the doubt and focus on the bigger picture of it all.

Here are the overarching things you need to do…

  • Ditch the diet mentality – focus on creating healthy habits not restrictions.
  • Let go of perfectionism.
  • Focus on your health and your happiness – decisions you make on a daily basis are what matter.

Throughout this holiday season try these tips to help you stay present, healthy & happy.

  • Prioritize sleep. When we are well rested, our bodies are able to handle stress much better.
  • Focus on being present in the moment, not just on giving presents.
  • Come up with a list of common “roadblocks” that you hit when it comes to the holiday season. Make a game plan of how you will navigate each event, and especially how you will handle your particular kryptonite.
  • Take walks. This is especially to decompress your mind AND it can minimize blood sugar spikes that can leave you feeling tired and sluggish after a big meal.
  • Pay attention to HOW you eat. How you eat is almost just as important to WHAT you eat. If possible eat slowly, chew your food well, and sit down to eat to minimize digestive upset after rich meals.
  • Enjoy the holidays, sans guilt. If you want to indulge, make it a conscious CHOICE and let go of the guilt. Truly enjoy it.
